Treatments & services:
We Treat the Following Cancers
- Prostate Cancer
- The prostate is a walnut shaped gland in the male pelvis that plays an important function in fertility. Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer in United States Men and the second leading cause of cancer deaths. The good news is that, when detected early, prostate cancer is easily curable. Therefore, it is important the all men older than 50 years of age undergo frequent prostate cancer checks and seek consultation from prostate cancer specialists if their prostate specific antigen blood test or physical exam is suspicious for prostate cancer.

- Kidney Cancer
- The kidneys are two bean shaped organs that filter blood. Kidney cancer affects both men and women of all ages. Blood in the urine and / or pain can be signs of kidney cancer, but most patients are diagnosed with kidney cancer by a CT scan before symptoms have developed. Recently the incidence of kidney cancer has been rising, but the good news is that treatments for kidney cancer continue to improve. Currently, the best treatment for kidney cancer is surgical removal of the tumor. For most situations this can be performed in a less invasive approach with robotic surgery or standard laparoscopy. - Bladder Cancer
- The bladder is the storage reservoir for urine. Bladder cancer is frequently caused by smoking, but also occurs in non-smokers. There are several types of bladder cancers. The low grade superficial types generally can be treated endoscopically without making an incision or removing the bladder. The higher grade types that invade into the muscle layer of the bladder typically requires removal of the entire bladder with creation of a “new” bladder using the patient’s own intestines. Robotic Assisted Minimally Invasive Surgery
- Robotic Radical Prostatectomy
- Although, robotic radical prostatectomy is a relatively new procedure it is now the most common surgical procedure performed for the treatment of localized prostate cancer. As with open radical prostatectomy, robotic radical prostatectomy involves removal of the entire prostate and seminal vesicles with re-connection of the urethra and bladder. The goal of radical prostatectomy is to remove all of the cancer without disrupting normal urinary, bowel and sexual function. Since the Da Vinci Robot provides a magnified field of vision along with enhanced surgical dexterity patient undergoing robotic radical prostatectomy have a better chance for successful outcome, and less chance for bleeding or other complications than those undergoing standard open radical prostatectomy. - Robotic Cystectomy and Urinary Diverson
- Robotic radical cystectomy is performed by a limited number of expert robotic surgeons. Robotic radical cystectomy is associated with less blood loss, lower risk of transfusions, fewer complications and faster recovery than standard open or laparoscopic cystectomy. For men this procedure involves removing the bladder as well as the prostate and seminal vesicles. In women the uterus, ovaries and fallopian tubes are typically removed, although in select cases they may be saved. Learn More about Robotic Cystectomy.
- Robotic Partial Nephrectomy
- Recently minimally invasive (laparoscopic) approach to total nephrectomy (removal of the entire kidney) have been popularized as a method to reduce pain and side effects associated with tradition open kidney surgery. The application of minimally invasive surgery to partial nephrectomy has been limited due to the technical difficulty of this operation. Recently, Dr. Ornstein has utilized the Da Vinci Robot for partial nephrectomy and along with his associates have demonstrated that robotic partial nephrectomy is much easier to learn than pure laparoscopic partial nephrectomy. In our experience robotic partial nephrectomy is the safest and most effective minimally invasive technique for partial nephrectomy. Learn More about Robotic Partial Nephrectomy.

Our Caring Physician * Dr. David Ornstein * Urologic Oncologist
Dr. David Ornstein is a fellowship-trained urologic oncologist and robotic surgeon providing specialized urologic care for patients with prostate, bladder and kidney cancer. Having completed 500 robotic surgical procedures including 400 robotic prostate cancer surgeries, Dr. Ornstein is one of the most experienced robotic surgeons in Texas. He also offers state-of-the art care for men with non-cancerous prostate problems including elevated PSA.
Dr. Ornstein has experience in all areas of urologic oncology with particular expertise in robotic radical prostatectomy, robotic cystectomy with urinary diversion and robotic partial nephrectomy. Having performed more than 400 robotic procedures, Dr. Ornstein is one of the most experienced robotic surgeons in the region. An accomplished laparoscopic surgeon, Dr. Ornstein began performing robotic radical prostatectomies in November 2003. Since that time he has expanded the use of robotic surgery for the treatment of bladder and kidney cancer. In fact, Dr. Ornstein was the first surgeon in North America to report having completed a cystectomy with ileal neobladder entirely with the Da Vinci Robot. In addition to training urology residents, Dr. Ornstein has taught and proctored several surgeons throughout the United States. He has lectured extensively on the topic of robotic surgery both national and internationally. He performed a live robotic female cystectomy at a robotic symposium in Seoul Korea.
